I am buying a 5400rpm hard drive and external case that is EIDE comaptible.
Will the pins on the hard drive match that cable ok? and will this idea
work??

5400 RPM doesn't tell us what interface the hard drive uses.
"Many" if not most would be EIDE, that is, ATA33, ATA66, or
ATA100... maybe even ATA133 for a late 5400 RPM drive but
the specific drive and it's specs will tell you.

Thanks Kony, any suggestions on a External Hard Drive enclosure? Fan or
fanless for this drive, which is a Maxtor 16 model

Maxtor 16 series is a PATA (133) drive, so you should be
able to take your pick of any modern enclosure that supports
larger (48bit LBA, > 128GB) EIDE/ATA drives.

Is cooling necessary??

For longest life, yes. The lower RPM should help some but
if you were to be running it constantly rather that powering
it up for backups then shutting it off again, I'd want
active (fan) cooling. Then again if you would leave it
running constantly an internal drive may be a better
solution.
