You can run other programs, with little time impact, with the first gen
5400, if you use the firewire connection. Running Photoshop at the same
time has little or no impact on scan time.

But that is not available on the second gen version. OTOH, the second
gen. 5400 scan times with ICE are about 300% faster.

Unless you had a multithreaded machine like a dual-core is maybe
hyperthreaded P4. Unless the ICE processing is multithreaded which I
doubt?

I don't agree. Can even do some photoshop work while doing a 5400 dpi
ICE scan. It's not 'snappy' quick, but fast enough.

Not speed that bothers me. Too many people have reported lock-ups when
trying to do something else at the same time as scanning with a 5400.
