Hi.

I have 3 servers in a win2000 domain,

Server Configuration
1. Windows 2000 Server act as DC, Mail Server, Terminal
Server
2. Windows 2000 act as Member Server, Terminal Server and
Accounting Server
3. Windows NT 4.0 act as Member Server, File/Printer
Server and Primary DNS Server.

I try to promote the Windows 2000 (2) from Member Server
to backup domain controller, i already install DNS, but
everytime I create a zone on the DNS always error so I
cannot promote the win2000 member server as backup domain.

Can you please advise what need to be done on this matter.

As we need to promote the Win2k Member server as
additional domain controller or backup domain

Thanks

in windows 2000, there are no pdc (primary domain controllers) or bdc
(backup domain controllers). Since you want it to become a domain
controller, just run dcpromo. For detailed instructions, look below. Also,
you'll want to remove the dns server from the member server, because when
you dcpromo it, it'll ask you for the domain name, and once the dcpromo is
run, you will enter the dns suffix, and once it becomes a domain controller,
the dns service will be isntalled, and the dns information will be
replicated to the new domain controller.

This site will tell you how to promote your member server to a domain
controller. Beware, your local SAM will be lost until you denote it from a
domain controller back to a member server or standalone server.
