When I try to install 512 Mb memory windows boot to the
login screen. Then it try to start user profile and falls
back to login screen. How can I solve this problem. Does
win2000 support 512Mb or more memory? PC Config: M/b
Albatron KX 600 based on VIA KT600 chipset, 256*2 or 512*1
DDR 400 RAM. On the different m/b and ram I achieve the
same result. That makes me think that win2000 doesn't
works properly with 512Mb memory.

Dmitry - W2k runs just fine with 512MB RAM, and anything else from 32MB
up to several GB too. That's not your problem.

I'd personally try a very careful reinstall, making sure all mainboard
and peripheral device drivers are the latest W2k-specific versions
(older drivers do not work with W2k.) If that failed and I were certain
I'd installed correctly, I'd then run a hard drive diagnostic utility
(downloadable from the drive manufacturer's website) and see if there's
a problem with the drive surface or a condition that can corrupt files.

Someone else here may have a pinpoint solution to your problem, however,
especially if you post with more information. For example, has the
system been working up to now and are you talking about installing more
RAM, or are you talking about a freah install of W2k? If it's a working
system but adding RAM causes this problem, then you have bad or
mismatched RAM, or RAM that is not within the mainboard's spec for speed
or slot position/capacity. Making sure BIOS sees all RAM might give you
a clue, too.

First check if you can boot into Safe mode and login.

Sounds like the profile directory for whatever account under which you
are trying to login is corrupted. Login in under Administrator. Rename
your account's profile directory (under C:\Documents and Settings).
Logout. Try logging in under your account which should then generate a
new profile. You can then try to migrate stuff, like "My Documents",
from your old renamed profile path to your new profile path.

.... and bad or mismatched RAM can cause file corruption-- such as corruption
of the profile. I've seen it on my own system.

First step is to remove the new RAM.

If faulty memory is suspect of causing the corruption, make a bootable
floppy (www.bootdisk.com, if you don't have Windows 9x/ME to make one)
and run Memtest86. I don't know if Memtest86 is robust enough to detect
memory timing problems with unmatched RAM sticks. Dmitry needs to
indicate brand and model so someone might help to note if they are
workable together, but it Dmitry bought generic sticks then he might not
be able to tell us, either.
