Alex

Fourth time I've posted this problem, still no answer.
My posts seem to keep getting skipped over, so I guess
should assume Microsoft's MVPs just don't have an answer.
It appears I'm not the only one with this problem.

I have windows xp sp1. Windows Messenger will load for
the two "limited account" users on my computer -- but not
for me, the computer administrator. It does not appear
in the task bar and when I click on it, the hour glass
pops up briefly then nothing happens. I get NO error
messages. Funnily enough, "MSMSGS.exe" shows up as
running as a process when I go into the task manager.
I've tried reinstalling it, but to no avail.

Interestingly, when I change one of the "limited
accounts" to a computer administator, the same thing
happens -- windows messenger does not load. Anyone have
any suggestions?

Greetings Alex,

I've never actually seen a problem where Administrators couldn't specifically start
Messenger, but do you happen to have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? If so, try turning off
the Messenger "protection" (which really doesn't do much) -- open Norton Antivirus
(Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the
clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck
MSN Instant Messenger and click OK. Then make sure no msmsgs are running, and try starting
it again [under an administrator account].

My computer does have Norton 2003 installed. I un-
checked the Messenger protection and have actually
disabled it while I try to resolve what's going on here --
neither has helped.

The error I get is the following (also posted to a thread
I started earler re: ATTN: Microsoft MVP...)

AppName: msnmsgr.exe
AppVer: 6.0.0.602
ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1217
Offset: 00009163

I'd be happy to send along the rest of the technical data
if you gave me an email address to send it to.

Also, I've discovered that logging into another account
with Admin access has the same problem. I haven't tried
backing down the rights to just User yet. I also deleted
the orignal user (admin rights) account and recreated it
to no avail.

Thanks,
Cary

Actually, I don't have Norton. I have McAfee, which has
been the cause of other problems, so I wouldn't be
surprised if it is a contributing factor to this one.

Alex.

"Got Linksys?"

So, after many hours of trudging through this here's the
scoop - at least for me..

The identical computer I've been speaking about actually
belongs to my Dad - we bought at the same time so I could
have an identical PC to walk him through things.

Anyway, when I sent hime home with the PC (Dell 4600)
fully configured it had *all* MS updates including MSN
6.0. Everything seemed to work fine. he did install
some apps - games, scanners, etc., but nothing that I
would consider major, with the exception that I run
Norton 2002 and he runs Norton 2003.

So after exhausting this support column and the web via
google it struck me that the only remaining difference
was that he has a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 with rev 1.44 from
Nov 2002 (one of the first with uPnP support) and I have
the Latest Linksys WRT54G (802.11g) with the latest
firmware. A quick scan of the Linksys website showed
version 1.45 from 2/2003 was available for him and I
installed (remotely). Bingo!! I couldn't believe it!

All of that said, my "guess" is that there is a uPnP
issue between MSN 6.0 and the older Linksys firmware
revs. If this info saves just one other person from
*wasting* a bunch of hours pulling their hair out then it
was worth it.

Thanks for the responses, Alex and Jonathan!

Cheers!
Cary

Alex-

Linksys is the name of the company that makes my router.
I'm pretty sure it is a uPnP issue (universal plug and
play) with MSN 6.0. There is a bug somewhere that it
doesn;t handle very well.

Cheers,
C

Thanks Cary. Glad to hear you've resolved your problem.
I don't believe I have linksys on my system.
