I applied the arctic silver and it was great for about 3 weeks.
The idle temp was 35C constantly. NOW it will _never_ go below 41C??

Also, when under a moderate load it jumps to 55-57C?

It's almost like I didn't apply the arctic silver, like it's the old
clay stuff?

My room temp is 80F, so what is the deal?

help?

Your case isn't cooled well, and when the room temp heats up your case
stays hotter causing the cpu to stay hotter. Just shoving fans in a
case doesn't automatically make it cooler; remember that fan motors
generate heat too.

Those aren't bad temps, but they shouldn't be higher than before with
the thermal pad. Some common mistakes that even experienced system
builders can make (I've seen these from places that even *I* would trust
to build a system for me):

- too much thermal compound

- correct amount of thermal compound but applied with the fingers and
introducing skin oils to the mix, but this takes time to effect performance

- corret amount of thermal compound but applied inappropriately so that
there is not an even layer and gaps or air bubbles result, and this
effects performance immediately,

- heat sink not resting flat against the CPU die

Also, give it some 'burn in' time after you clean it off and reapply
fresh compound, taking care not to repeat the mistakes I've just listed.
I've posted about correct technique in applying thermal paste several
times in this group.

Regards,

Ari

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

A dust bunny attack?
The room temperature went up since then.
Installed anything since then?
Something moved inside the case.
Fan speed change/Fan failure.

Usually a jump in processor temp like that indicates your CPU fan is
running too slow. I had one that dropped to 50% on it's own (which
is better than dying entirely). You may have an issue with your fan
speed controller too.

Yikes. Voltage issue or did it get a killer dust bunny wrapped
around the axle?
