41 Megs in Empty Recycler?

G

Guest

I use XP SP2. I have moved several of my settings folders to the C:\ root.
I do not recall moving "Recycler" to the C:\ root, but it is there. Inside
the RECYCLER folder are three Recycle-bin-icon type folders, all named with
a series of numbers and letters.

In addition, there is a folder named NPROTECT. I have turned off Norton's
Recycle-Bin Protect service. Yet the folder remains. It has many files
inside. Each filename consists of several digits, ending in a period.
There is no extension. When I sort by date, I see that some of the files go
back to 1996.

I cannot delete any of those files -- the error message says "cannot read
from source"

How do I delete those files and make that folder go away?

C:\RECYCLER is where it belongs.

%systemdrive%\RECYCLER
With at least one folder with the SID #
for every user on the machine.

If there is only one user, then there is only one
SID # folder. That SID # folder is the Recycle Bin.

Security identifiers (SIDs) are numeric values that identify a user or
group.

Each hard disk or partition contains a hidden folder named Recycler. The
Recycler folder is used only on NTFS partitions. On FAT32 the RECYCLED
folder is used. The Recycler folder contains a Recycle Bin for each user
that logs on to the computer, sorted by their security identifier (SID).

Windows allocates one Recycle Bin for each partition or hard disk. If your
hard disk is partitioned, or if you have more than one hard disk in your
computer, you can specify a different size for each Recycle Bin.
In addition, there is a folder named NPROTECT.

Norton Protected Recycle Bin

Right click the Recycle Bin | Properties | Norton Protection tab

Nprotect is part of Norton Utilities. (It replaces the default recycle
bin.) It prevents the user from accidentally deleting data from the PC and
Recycle Bin. Adds an extra layer of safety before you remove deleted files
from the Recycled Bin.

SYMPTOMS
After you install a version of Norton AntiVirus, the Recycle Bin no longer
appears on the desktop.

CAUSE
This issue occurs because Norton AntiVirus changes the name of the Recycle
Bin to "Norton Protected Recycle Bin." Only the words "Norton Protected"
appear below the icon on the desktop because there is not sufficient space
to display the longer name.]]
