I'm posting this using 40tude which I downloaded and installed only
yesterday after checking out the Pricelessware site. I am so far finding it
very difficult but am determined to learn. I can't find the answer to my
question in the Help file or at the 40tude site so thought I'd try here as
many of you obviously use the program.

My problem - when at this newsgroup the little + or - sign/symbol in front
of the posts is absent and all replies appear separately. When at a
microsoft.public newsgroup the + / - "button" is there and the posts appear
with the first post showing and replies can only be seen by clicking on the
+.

I have spent an hour trying to find a setting that is different between the
two groups but to no avail.

Can someone please set me on the right path before I give up on this
supposedly good program.

Many thanks in advance
Robyn

Sort by thread, date not by subject, date should give you what you want.

It's a threading issue, don't remember the command off hand. Try the
news.software.readers froup. They can answer it there.

In Group - Default groups options - Sort/Score, choose to sort by "Thread,
Date".
When you'll use the scoring rules, you might think about sorting by "Thread,
max score, date" or alike.
Many thanks in advance

You're welcome.
You might think also to set a right signature in Settings - Server,
identities, signatures... - Signatures :-)

Here's what happens in the version I have installed: Highlight the
groupname and click the +/- column header in the message list pane to
display threads. Successive clicks toggle date order. These settings
override the global settings and are retained. You might benefit from
monitoring news.software.readers filtering for Subject: [DIALOG]. Alas,
I do not know how to set filters in Dialog; I don't use it regularly.
Dialog is a butt-ugly and klunky rip of Forte's Agent, which itself has
fallen behind in the marginal-features and eyecandy wars, IMO.

Group > Default Group Options > Retrieving Put a check in newly retrieved
threads are initially expanded.

Another important one is: Settings > General Settings > Misc Check the box
that says: Handle OE-Signature delimiters.
That will strip "some" of those sigs.

You picked a fine newsreader contrary to an opinion later in this thread.

Excuse my replying to all in this one post but now I can't get any message
bodies at all (read your replies in OE). Am off to the newsgroup
news.software.readers - thanks Tim Weaver.

Nicolaas and MLC - <sort by thread date> - settings were already that way
but thanks for your time

dszady -

Hi,

there is a german newsgroup specially for "40tude Dialog". I think, you
should ask there. The group-members are mostly specialists (including the
programmer of 40tude)

Thanks I will try to find it,
I hope I don't need to know German though ??

Just a comment - I haven't seen the name Kessler often (in fact I think
never). My gg grandmother was a Kessler - from Germany :)

Well, they speak german in that newsgroup, but you can ask in english, most
of them know english too.

It sounds like a common german name.
It probably means bowl-maker.

You need to sort you group by thread, date. you do this by clicking on the
column heading (+/-) at the top. This is a per group setting, hence why it
works in one group and not another.

Ahh, thankyou. I was right clicking to get into the properties bit. I
think I have a flaky installation b/c many things aren't working how
they should and I have had numerous errors and the program stops
responding. Trying Xnews right now as Dialog won't wrok at all. Puts me
off but I will try a uninstall/reinstall.
Thanks again for your help

Something to suspect. I had much problems recently with programs not
responding, BSDs etc. I finally traced it to a very flaky video card.
I replaced that and most of the problems stopped immediately.

Thanks for the advice. So far it is only Dialog with the problems and I
haven't had time to check it out further. Mind you, in the meantime I am
quite enjoying Xnews :)
