404 on back and script errors on load of some pages (e.g. hotmail)

I'm running IE 6 SP2 and am experiencing the following probs

1. Occassional script errors on services like hotmail. I get an error in
the status bar and buttons, linke etc don't appear to work. If I repeatedly
refresh the page I sometimes can get it to work but its unbelievably
frustrating.
I've even found it happening on this site - the page loads but the it looks
like the stylesheet fails. I've had to switch to modzilla just to post this.

2, On some sites I get 404s when I click the back button. Always happens on
amazon.... its driving me nuts.

Anyone experiencing similar things/know of possible fixes? I suspect that at
some point one of the updates was corrupt but I can't identify which one.
