40 pin and 80 pin ide cables - HOw do I tell which is which ?

No such animal. You might be thinking of an 80-conductor ide cable.

Let me answer your question with another one. Let's say you have two
similar boxes of crayons. One has 64 crayons in it, and the other has 48.

Can you think of a way to determine which is which?

80 WIRE ide cables have one connector colored blue (this end goes to your MB
or disk controller card).

It's not always coloured blue. I've got some supplied with gigabyte
boards that have a green end for plugging into the motherboard and then
the other connectors are black and grey.
