3rd Party Internet Email over AOL Connection - Can it be done?

I cannot seem to get Outlook to send 3rd party email when I am connected to
the internet via AOL (Dialup or DSL). I know Juno requires you to use their
SMTP server (smtp.juno.com), but AOL Support insists that nothing needs to
change when using them. All of the Outlook Internet Mail Settings work fine
when connected via T1 or Cable Modem at home. Is this a configuration
error, a Mail Service Provider issue, or an AOL limitation? Thanks!

AOL do not (AFAIK) allow relaying. You must put in the Juno smtp server
settings in Outlook and set it to authenticate. That should work.

Just to clarify - are you suggesting I use smtp.juno.com for the SMTP server
in Outlook when I am connected via AOL? When you say authenticate, do you
mean to use a valid Juno account userid/password? Thanks1

That's correct. Of course it may still not work! (Don't hold your
breath.....)

Unfortunately, that didn't work either (thanks for the suggestion though!).
I also tried using XP's SMTP server (locally on my laptop), but got the
following error: "The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by your
mail server. If this problem persists, contact you LAN Administrator or
Internet Provider".

Also (to clarify) - the internet email I am trying to configure is not Juno.
Juno was just a possible dialup solution when travelling.

We are using Outlook 2000 (Windows XP). It receives email fine, but
unfortunately will not send. So far, all of the research I have done points
to AOL prohibiting SMTP access/relay. You say that it has worked for you
(sending email) when connected via AOL (not MSN)? Have you tried Dialup?
Thanks!

What version of outlook are you using? I use outlook 2002 I have aol/msn
installed and have dsl. Every once in awhile I will get mail error message
in outlook that says cannot connect to mail server but then I hit
send/receive a couple times and it goes and I have pop3 email configured in
Outlook. So with outlook you are using a pop3 account for email?

say authenticate, do
you

.
That seems like the same problem that I am having. Ever
since SP@ (I think), I can receive MSN and Hotmail when
not connected to my Exchange server but I cannot send.
Also when I log back on the server the mail stays in the
outbox but the outbox is hidden. I saw one knowledge base
article that said to create 2 different profiles but then
you have a hard time getting email from one profile to
the other. I hope that MSN is planning a fix. I'm tired
of logging to Hotmail whenever I want to send email
disconnected.

AOL is known not to Play Nice With Others. They may be blocking outbound
port 25 on that connection....I've given up trying to do much with AOL.

I have been tring forever to get AOL and Outlook to work together. I have called AOL several times and they say it cannot be done. Then they say use AOL Communicator. I call them, they say it will not work either ... I was misinformed, etc. How did you get AOL to work with Outlook?
