3M RAM possible?

I just bought a new machine. It has 4 RAM slots. 2 slots are now taken up
with 512M RAM each = 2x 512= 1 M RAM.

Question - Can I slip in 2 1M RAM simms to get to 3M RAM in total? Or,
must I have similar sized Simms in all 4 slots?

Hi JW. You have 2 x 512meg of RAM. That = 1024meg, or 1Gig.
You should check up on your Mboards` capability. Not all MBs
can be completely filled with RAM, and work successfully.
1 Gig id pretty good.

OK. So I;m getting my Ks and Gs confused. I think you get the point of my
Q.

I have 4 slots. 2 have 512 K Ram. Literature for my box indicates
expandable to 4 G RAM. Can I add 2, 1G SIMMs to take it to 3 G? Or, do
I need to keep all SIMMs the same for all 4 slots .... in other words ... if
currently have 512 K in 2 slots ... must stay with 512 K in remaining 2?

As I said before JW.
Check with your MB manual to see if you can Mix memory modules.
If you haven`t got the Manual. Google for info on your Motherboard.
Better safe than out of pocket.

Jon - I wouldn't be here if I had not checked the manuals and tried the web
search route. There's nothing in the manuals. Not squat. The best I get
is this pathetic couple sentences ... "The motherboard contains sockets for
DDR DIMMs, the exact number of sockets and type of DDR memory module depends
on which model you have." Helpful, eh?

Web search ... I spent a full hour. There's tons and tons of stuff out
there ... good luck finding anything that addresses the odd situation as to
whether you can put 2 512 K Dimms and then 2 1G Dimms on a motherboard. So,
I ask again ... can this be done without a problem?

I don't have a clue what motherboard I have. It's a brand new computer. 3
GHz, dual processors.

Google for, and D\load `Everest Home Edition`.
This program will give you oodles of info about your machine.
Including what your Mboard is. That will give us a starting point.

It's 512MB dammit! If you can't figure out this simple nomenclature (after
reading manuals and Google-ing) I suggest you take your machine into a shop
and let people who know what they're doing upgrade the RAM for you.

Yep, clues seem to be in short supply. Get a professional to do it. Usenet
isn't *always* a replacement for professional service. You also need a
certain amount of learning ability. If you still don't know that you already
have 512 *MB* RAM modules after all this time you claim to have spent on it
then I doubt you're capable of doing this yourself. Wouldn't surprise me if
the answer wasn't right there in front of you somewhere, hiding in plain
sight.

<Sigh> Access to usenet doesn't automatically make everyone into a
serviceman.

LOL, Just noticed that this is an old thread, I don't check the group as
often as I used to. However, my newsreader still faithfully downloads it for
me.
