3dfx voodoo1 cards = graphical mess onscreen.

Bought two 3dfx voodoo1 cards, one Diamond Monster 3D, the other Maxi
Gamer 3D. Can't get either to work. When either running a 3dfx test
utility or a 3dfx game, the screen goes really weird - all messy
graphics, weird colors, like a digital SPLAT onscreen! I usually have
to turn the PC off at this point.

The thing is, I think I've got the correct drivers loaded. The device
is listed correctly inside Windows 98 Device Manager. Also, if I go
to Control Panel and look at the display properties, the 3dfx tab is
there with information about both the hardware and drivers. Also,
with the Diamond card there was a utility called mojo which told you
info about the card, and when I ran this utility it reported back the
card's info - all seemed well.

Another thing - I have successfully tested three voodoo2 cards OK, so
it seems so strange I can't make any progress at all with these
voodoo1 cards.

Any ideas please?

Thanks, regards, Robert.

Perhaps because they're older than dirt they no longer work?

Voodoo2 cards are completely backwards-compatible with Voodoo, FYI.

Actually, I didn't realise they were completely backwards-compatible.
Perhaps I'm wasting my time with the voodoo1 cards then. So if I run
*any* game at all which works ok on voodoo1, it'll be just fine on
voodoo2 -- do I have to tweak any .ini/batch/whatever files and such,
or does it all just work "automatically"?

Thanks, regards, Robert.

I've just had a thought. The voodoo1 driver files I am using are for
direct x version 5. If I am running windows 98se, and this installs
direct x version 6 by default, (and then I installed my graphics
driver package which then installed direct x version 9), then the
voodoo1 card is going to have problems with this direct x version. i
think that's the problem.
