Can I use a 3dfx (Diamond II 3d) video card in a system and use Xp as my operating system? I have this game that requires a 3dfx card. I have enough parts to put a system together and want to use XP. I tried running this game on another of my systems that use a GF4 card and it was not as nice because I had to run it in a software mode. Any help I can get I say thanks in advance.

That's a very old card, it definately won't keep up with the GF4. As for Windows compatability, it should accept any VGA compatable card.

Thanks I'll try it to see if it works. About being and old card this is true but the game is also old but it is the best drag racing game going. It was written in 96 I think and it was written to use 3DFX VooDoo stuff which is the in thing then. Any other video format must run in the software mode and the graphics don't look as good or the movement (controls) for the car are slower.

You will need to find a compatible 3rd party 3DFX driver for XP, if one that
really works exists.

There are a number of 'fan made' 3dfx drivers that you can use in XP. Some
of them do work well enough to play games but in my experience they all
crash XP sooner or later. I found that intolerable in a machine that has to
do more or less everything, but for a 'gaming only' computer it might be
acceptable.

Dual booting with Win9x would be the better solution. XP has a native 3dfx
driver which does not support Glide at all but otherwise works (albeit much
slower than a real 3dfx driver). If you want to try, most of the existing
3dfx drivers and utilities can be found here:

On the otherhand, for one game you might be just as well off by using a
'glide wrapper' with a more current video card, if you can find a wrapper
that works with your game. I tried a few of them recently but couldn't get
any to work with my Radeon 7500 and "Mask of Eternity".
