37 Gig Barrier Question

Dilemma! I'm trying to install a new HD (160 Gig Samsung) on a machine that
supports only 37 Gigs. There is apparently no BIOS upgrade. What are my
options? The drive will allow access as is if I place a jumper on the 37 Gig
position (I assume this is to allow for such limitations, but only shows up
as 37 Gigs).

Your board almost certainly has a low ATA interface speed,
thus a PCI IDE controller card (ATA133) would not only solve
the capacity issue (so long as your OS supports the capacity
too) but result in higher performance. Promise Ultra133 is
one example, though others are cheaper, around $15-20 for a
CMD or Siig chip'd ATA133 card on http://www.pricewatch.com

Get the overlay manager from the drive manufacturer's web site. For
example, Maxtor has their Maxblast 3 software to provide the overlay
manager. The overlay manager usurps the bootstrap code area (first 460
bytes) of the MBR (master boot record) found on the first physical drive
found by the BIOS. That means you cannot use other software that also
tries to usurp the MBR bootstrap code, like multiboot manager (e.g.,
BootMagic) and GoBack.

Thanks guys two great ideas, maybe I'll get this machine back to its owner
soon!

The only option you have is to install a current PCI IDE card and it's BIOS
should recognize the full 160 GB when you plug the harddrive into its
internal port.
