I have a HP 3310 All-in-one printer which I use for a lot of black and
white printing and an *infrequent* color print.

And yet it is now asking for a color cartridge to be replaced (this is
the third one).

Why am I running out of colored ink when I an not using color??

Because you use color ink when printing in black to make the black look
blacker.

The best solution for this is to get a black only laser printer for standard
documents and use the inkjet for color only work.

Cari, thanks for confirming my suspicion. Do you think doing Printer
Properties and then selecting gray scale / black only when printing
will force it to use only black?

Even selecting black only will reduce, not eliminate color ink use. The
heads go thru a cleaning/purge cycle at various times. This involves all
colors, and is intended to help reduce clogging. It becomes more important
as the nozzle diameter gets smaller with the higher resolution on newer
models. And, naturally, it helps sell replacement ink.

Yah, no kidding! That thing seems to spend as much time purging as it
does printing!! Again, you are confirming my suspicions. It wont let
you keep printing black and white if a color cartridge goes empty
either -- gotta have something to purge I guess.

And here I thought getting a printer with separate color cartridges as
opposed to my old 720 series with separate black and color was going
to save cartidge costs!

It's a nice looking unit though :=)

Cari -- different subject -- you may remember months ago I had a *lot*
of trouble not being able to run setup for my hp3310 on my Dell XP
Media Center Machine

The Microsoft people seemed to acknowledge the probem, HP never
officially would acknowledge the problem, but did finally post a new
web-install package dated 9/4/06 that would at least run on the
machine.

Not trouble free, mind you. I managed to get both the scanner and
printer working with a combination of the new install file and the old
cd so I am ok, if not content, but the HP Solution Center software
itself reports "No HP devices have been detected". Oh -- ok.

Glad it's almost working. MCE is wonderful most of the time but
occasionally it really seems to hiccup. I tried to play CSI 3 Dimensions of
Murder.... and the graphics just wouldn't play nicely. On lower spec PCs
with just XP Pro, and much lower spec graphics, it played just fine. Again
it was the fact the programmers seemed to forget about MCE.

Oh well. I just took over hubby's PC when I felt the need to be an
investigator. Not quite what I had in mind but......
