Why wont hard drive makers make drives so that once there fromated they
have the volume that the ad said it would.

i do know that when i buy a hrad drive that it will be smaller than
what they say when i format it but it is annoying.

i have just bought my third hard drive for my current system, and i now
have about 820 Gigs of un formated space.

But it still annoyme that we get lees then what we paid for. but if
some one can me a reason for this please tell.

P.S this hard drive marks the 10th hrad drive i have ever bought

Yea, it is like buying an outhouse that is guaranteed not to smell. When it
started smelling I tried to take it back but they told me that somebody
crapped in it and refused to honor the warranty.

I think you got a really good case, you just got to find some good lawyers.
I suggest you contact any of the following:

RIAA (if outside of america then IFPI)

Tell them you cant fit all their music and movies on your 820gb un formatted
space. They might take you case pro-bono

It's the difference between 1000 bytes (ad speak) and 1024 bytes (computer speak), therefore fewer
Bytes of 1024 than Bytes of 1000.

At least they don't do as the tapes and tape drive makers do,
and lie by rating them at double the native capacity,
as if you always get 2x compression.

400Gb hard disk drives would be "400/800Gb" drives,
or just "800Gb (compressed)."

1000 is actually the international SI standard and
plenty of computer params use that too, most
obviously with cpu speed and comms speeds.

In fact hard drives dont have an intrinsically
binary organisation, only ram does.

The incompetence is on your side, the HDD manufacturers are just
following the laws on measurements and units:

Why can't users finally be getting a clue about this one?

No. Its the law almost everywhere. You can actually be held liable
(depending on the country) if you do not follow this in advertising.
