C'mon guys, someone who knows how the heck you firgure
out which version of WindowsXP you have (32 or 64 bit)
please step up to the plate and let all of us "idiots"
know. I'll happily forward the secret potion to all of
the other folks looking for the same info. We're trying
to do the right thing here and protect ourselves from
this virus, but the lack of information on Microsoft's
product and system info both online in our downloaded
software or even in our printed product packaging is
making this impossible without the miracle of somehow
getting through to a real person on the phone. Help!
Anyone? Microsoft, if you're listening, please address
this topic on your otherwise helpful site!

There's no obvious indicator for you to see, so just trust us - if you have
to ask the question then you are running the 32-bit version. Especially if
you are running XP Home, which is only available in the 32-bit flavour.

The 64-bit version only runs on a very specific subset of expensive,
high-end machines. If you'd spent out on one of those then you would know
about it.

Here here ...I do agree with you Anna. Microsoft's lack
of information for solving problems like this ..I was
even more appalled at how they changed the web page about
the worm later in the day.

Anyway ..what you guys needed to know...
32-Bit is the XP version most every home user has.
The 64-bit was developed to run on the new Intel Itanium
2 Processor to meet the demands of technical workstation
users who require large amounts of memory and floating
point performance in areas such as mechanical design and
analysis, 3D animation, video editing and composition,
and scientific and high-performance computing applications

Hence its for the major graphic folks and designer out
there that do this for a living and cost major bucks to
buy.

You have 32bit most likely

If you have XP Home it is for sure 32bit.

If you have XP Pro..Right click on My Computer and select Properties. If
you see 64-bit in there anywhere u have 64 it it does not say 64 then u have
32.

Hello all,

I will be posting this on several threads; however to tell if you have a
64-bit vs. a 32-bit computer, just run the System Information tool. (type
winmsd at in the Run box) If you have a 32-bit system, the "System Type"
listed should be something like"X86-based PC". If you have a 64-bit
system, you will see an entry stating something like "Itanium (TM) - based
PC". In addition, when looking at the processor(s) on the computer, a
32-bit system should start with x86 and a 64-bit will start with ia64.
(didn't check an AMD or other processors to see if they show different)

I also noticed that on the Windows 2003 Server I tested, that the winver
tool showed in the artwork that the OS was built for 64-bit hardware.
(don't remember the exact wording)

Best regards,

Another PLONKer who can't scroll down 5 minutes worth of posts. I did some
calculations today and worked out that this question is asked every 2 hours.
Anna, you really need help if you can't search. The answer is staring you in
the face.
