Question as per subject title. What is the difference? Do I need certain
hardware to run 64 bit, and if so what?

Yes, you need a PC with an Intel or AMD 64 bit processor. If you don't know
if you have that, you probably don't.

32-bit is 32-bit and 64-bit is 64-bit. Just
like it says.

You must have a system with a 64-bit capable
CPU, AMD Athlon 64 or Intel EM64T, to run
64-bit. 32-bit will run on either a 32-bit or a
64-bit CPU.

Thanks for responses.

I have an AMD Athlon XP2000+ 1.67Ghz, anyone know if that's 64 bit or not?
It's at least 2, nearly 3 years old.

It is not an AMD Athlon 64 or an AMD Sempron 64.

It is not 64-bit capable since it is a 32-bit CPU.

That is a 32 bit processor.
