Hi readers,
I'm sucked. don't rib me for wrong posting. Bought new
laptop in Nov. Toshiba Satelite Pro A200 XP Pro.

Wednesday ev, I found out about these Updates. Already spent some time
removing trial apps , Norton Internet security,

Office 2007, SQL 2005, one or two more. Have posted this on Toshiba NG .
Lack of support , only five live enthusiasts

including me. Have already downloaded these +Bios updates... I'm on
holiday 2 weeks time with the laptop i hope.
Definitely Wrong Xmas present I think. I am not familiar with laptops or
toshiba. I have 2 desktops beside all working great
across the network. Should I attempt any of these updates before leaving.

comments etc appreciated

Sorry, you say "BIOS" updates, but you talk about applications like
Office 2007. Application updates and BIOS updates are two completely
different things.

It's *highly* unlikely that you would have 31 BIOS updates, so I
assume that's a misnomer, and you are really talking about application
updates, but please clarify what you mean.

In general, you should never update your BIOS unless you are having a
problem that the update is known to fix. But application updates are a
different story. In general all application updates *should* be
installed.

NO you don't need to update bios because it is not going to improve your
experience of using Windows operating system.

I am surprised you are getting bios updates automatically because these
you don't normally get!

If you have Window updates then clearly you will need to update these
because of security issues which you are likely to meet in your holidays
especially if you are going to use unsecured WI-FI connections which you
get in hotels etc.

Hope this helps.

You are confused by nomenclature.
They are NOT BIOS updates.

See Ken Blake's response.

Hi Ken,
sorry I did'nt make my post very clear. these are new Hardware
driver updates for different functions within the laptop , just about every
aspect of construction. Majority being toshiba, one or two others, Intel
chip set, LAN , sound driver . Also new BIOS
Most of the existing drivers are written July 2007, whereas the new Dec
2007. What does one do ?

Hardware drivers are NOT BIOS updates.

The best advice is NOT get hardware drivers through Windows Updates. Get them directly via
the manuafcturer or vendor.

OK, but once again, to be clear, these are *not* BIOS updates. The
BIOS is another thing entirely.

Follow David Lipman's advice: get driver updates from the hardware
manufacturers web sites, not from Windows Update.

Do not ever apply a bios update or a hardware driver update unless it
addresses a specific
problem you are having.
especially dangerous is the bios update...
if it fails...it can literally render your machine useless.

As far as critical security updates for XP...
yes, by all means do that
