1) Is there an equivalent to the Recovery Console in Vista and -
If so, how does one install it to hard disk?
If not, what's the equivalent?

2) How do you modify the Vista Startup sound (that occurs before any user
logs in), and especially how do you change its volume (it's terribly loud)?

3) The default action for the "power" button in the Start menu is to send
the system into standby. How does one modify this?

Thank you.

Unfortunately Vista is all good news and they took a few steps
backwards in some areas.

I don't believe there is a recovery console, but you can boot in safe
mode if that helps. And you can do a complete PC backup or try
third-party software that will be Vista compatible to do backups or
imaging the drive.
2) How do you modify the Vista Startup sound (that occurs before any

loud)?

I'm not sure you can change that sound in Vista, but you can turn the
volume down on the speakers. I don't find it any louder than the rest
of the sounds.

I seem to recall a hack or something to change or remove the sound,
but you may have to Google for that.
3) The default action for the "power" button in the Start menu is to
send
the system into standby. How does one modify this?

Right-click the desktop, select Personalize, Screen Saver, click
Change power settings line, click Choose what the power button does
line.

From the Change power settings line you can also edit other settings
by clicking the Change plan settings line for a Power Plan, then
select Change advanced power settings line. Lots of things to fiddle
with in there, but be careful.

:-)

The WinPE environment has many recovery tools. Boot the dvd and take a
look.

Hello Pierre,
There isn't any way to change the startup sound.
You can disable it in the control panel, sound, but there isn't a way to
replace the startup sound.
Thanks,

Is there a reason why one couldn't take some other wave file and call it
"Windows Startup.wav" and place it in Windows\Media?

Mike

The startup sound is embedded in a .dll, it's not in the media folder ;-)

If I'm not mistaken, there's no startup sound in XP; there is a login sound.
For all of those complaining about the startup sound, wouldn't it solve your
issue to just turn off the startup sound and set a login sound to your
liking?

| To use Vista's recovery console use the following instructions:
|
|
| 1.) Insert your Vista DVD and boot from it. You will see the loading files
| screen, then the first installation screen will appear.
|
|
| 2.) Click next on first screen, then click the link that says recovery
| options.
|
|
| 3.) You will then see a System Recovery options dialog - select your
| keyboard layout and click next.
|
|
| 4.) Windows will search for any valid installations, once this is
completed,
| click next.
|
|
| 5.) You are then presented with the following options: Startup Repair,
| System Restore, CompletPC Restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, and
| Command Prompt. Select CompletePC Restore.
|
|
| 6.) From the Windows Disaster Recovery Dialog, you can either select the
| recommended backup or select a specific date and time from available
backups.
| Once you have selected the backup you want to restore, click next.
|
|
| 7.) You will then have the option to erase and format all disks, or just
| restore the system partition. Check the appropriate box, then click
finish.
|
|
| 8.) There will be a final prompt to confirm Disaster Recovery with a
warning
| that the selected disk(s) will be formatted and all current data lost.
Check
| the box to confirm, and click OK.
|
| 2. Go to Control Panel/Sound/Sounds. Untick the box to play the startup
| sound. You can then, perhaps, selct another sound from the list, or copy
your
| own into the Media directory in Windows. Don't forget to save your scheme.
|
| Your last question.
| Cotrol panel/Power options. Select change settings then change advanced
| settings . Scroll down to the power buttons and lid and then start men
| button. Select your option and save and exit

Thank you all for the answers :)

I'll come back here about the startup sound volume adjustment if I find
something. I don't like to have to twiddle the volume knob all the time, and
it will damage it eventually. Whoever at MS took the decision to hard-code
this sound should be charged for all the repairs that will ensue. MS should
remember one thing: it's *my* machine, it should sound and look as *I* want
it to, not someone in a big corporation that only thinks of its bottom line.

While I don't necessarily disagree with you, it's not going to change
anything, nor is Microsoft likely to pay for any damage caused by your
twiddling with the volume knob. First, as Colin noted, it's part of the
branding of their OS. Note, I stated "their OS". While it is your machine,
it is their OS for which you own a license to use on your machine. They've
taken a stance on certain items, such as logos and trademark sounds, and are
under no obligation to make them accessible to change by the end user.

And a couple more of the frequently asked about things that are branding
items are the network logon and the ribbon bar in Office.

Maybe it's a sound card/driver issue?
Haven't heard anyone else reporting this problem,
(although I do tend to ignore problems that I don't have).
I have no problem here using a Soundblaster X-fi.
The start up sound is exactly the same level as all
the other Windows sounds.

Nutcase (snicker), I agree that it's "their OS". Thus it befalls them to
make sure it's not more trouble than it's worth. And while they're perfectly
within their rights to use a branding sound, they should arrange things so
that the volume of it can be adjusted easily.
As for their unlikeliness to pay, that's what lawyers and courts are there
to decide... <beg>

The problem I have is, I can adjust all the Windows sounds' volumes easily,
except for the startup sound. And if I want to be able to hear my music, I
can't set the speakers' volume low enough for the startup sound to be
reasonable.
