I am trying to install a new HDD in an acer laptop extensa 501DX.

I keep getting an error that says:

3 : HDD is not connected or NG
No hard disk found!

What does "NG" mean and how can I get around that error.

I have several HDD drives that I"m trying to use, but I get the
same error message with any HDD that I try to install.

I am attempting to put Windows 98 back on the machine, because that's
what it came with.

HELP!

No Good. Really. I'm suprised acer actually used such an informal
acronym, but that's what it means.

What capacity hard drives have you tried? I ask because the original
hard drive is only 4GB, if you're putting large drives in there, it may
not recognise them. Also, if you got the hard drive plugged in upside
down, that's an issue.

Common BIOS limits are 8GB, 32GB, 64GB and 137GB.

I looked an acer's website for the max hard drive size on that unit,
they're not saying. Just a vauge note to contact Acer or an Acer
Authorized dealer before performing upgrades.

Should you get past that part, here are the drivers.

Recently I repaired a Sony laptop that was giving similar messages. It
turned out to be the connector that attaches the hard drive to the
motherboard. If yours is removable take it off and look for broken
leads or broken wires on the ribbon cable. I had to get some fancy
soldering done to it by a co-worker to salvage the connector.
