3 hard disk

Oradba Linux

Can an IDE cable support a master disk and 2 slave disks ? Is there a IDE
cable like that
available in the market ? There are some discussions about adding 3 or 4
hard disks
but they talk about making your cd-rom drive a slave and third hard disk as
master .
Also some discussions talk about newer motherboards have 2 IDE connectors
and
there by giving the flexibility to add 4 hard disks. I am right now shopping
for a barebones pc
and interested to find out this info so as to buy what i want .

Only 2 ATA/IDE devices per cable. No way around it. A master and a slave
is all that can be there.

Almost all current motherboards have 2 IDE controllers/connectors. Gives a
total of 4 devices (1 master + 1 slave per cable). Some have additional
connectors for more drives. It is becoming common to have 2 SATA connectors
for the new style of drives starting to show up.

Sounds like you need to visit some of the beginers hardware sites. Good

That, and some motherboards have more than 2 IDE connectors. If someone
wants to use 3 or more IDE hard drives though, probably the smartest
solution would be to add an IDE expansion card for a couple more IDE
connectors. Just make sure your boot drive is connected to the
otherboard. -Dave

I did mention additional connectors ;) Probably wasn't as obvious as it
could have been that SATA wasn't the only possible additional connectors.

Additionaly, most addon card controllers can be bootable. Just have to set
the BIOS setup to boot SCSI, which these cards look like to the computer.

any mobo i;'ve ever seen has had two ide channels
and you can install two devices per channel...
so you could put one hd and one cd on one channel

then two harddrives on the second.

if you need more drives...just add a pci controller


otherwise go with SCSI !

I've got two motherboards that have four controllers each. More I can
put up to eight IDE devices on them.
