3.5 Floppy hunting a lot

Upgraded to XP Home a month or so ago, no problem. For the last week
or so, whenever I boot up, or shut down, or sometimes seemingly for no
reason whatsoever, I hear the floppy drive humming & grunting, as if
it's hunting. Of course there is no floppy in the drive. I'm
familiar with a short blip on startup, but this is a rather long, like
2 second hum/grind.
I know it's not hardware, because I'm alternately booting
to 2 different HDs in same machine, no problem with other version of
Windows.
Do I need to be tweaking something in XP?

Perhaps you recently installed, or reconfigured, some third-party software that
searches your floppy, such as an anti-virus program.

To determine if the problem is caused by third-party software use the Startup Tab in
the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe). That is:

- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Click the Startup tab.
- Click to clear all check boxes for third-party software except for one.
- Click OK, and then restart the computer when you are prompted.
- Repeat this process, selecting a different third-party software check box one at a
time then restarting your computer, until the problem occurs.

Check your antivirus software for an option that scans a floppy on startup,
thjs is the most common cause.

Alternately, you likely have an MRU entry in the registry causing the issue,
eventually it will pass as it ages and other entries take its place. But, to
get rid of it now, start/run regedit, click edit/find and search for A:\.
See if it turns up in an MRU key. If so, delete the string from the right
pane containing it. Close the registry editor and reboot when finished to
see if it helps.

Had a similar condition regarding Floppy A:\ Drive. In my instance I would
get activity in my floppy drive during defragmentation of C Drive. Your
suggestion corrected that activity.

Hi Stan,

MRU=Most Recently Used, they are the lists of recently accessed files, etc.
that you see when you open certain menus. Here is an example:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

contains the list of programs you most recently ran from the start/run
prompt (the list you see if you open it and hit the dropdown).
