I have a laptop harddrive that I put in a coolmax external case so that
I can back up files through the usb. It had been working for a few
months now whenever I would plug it in. But now, when I plug it into
the usb, all I get is a green light on the case, indicating on, whereas
before it would be blue and I could hear the disk spinning.
Does anyone happen to know what could be wrong?
I tried to plug in the other usb into the computer as well, I guess its
for more power, and nothing has changed.

Its died.

Try another case to see if its the case or the drive.

With this info it is very difficult to tell anything.
Best remove the HDD, conect it to an IDE bus (via an adapter)
and use a SMART tool to get its smart ststus. If the disk
turns out to be fine then the encolsure is broken.

What I really wanted to know was if the enclosure can be broken, as I
am new to these portable hdd, so I thought maybe it was a usb driver
issue. Now that I know the case could be a problem I guess I should
troubleshoot the hard drive first. It might be hard as I dont think I
have the smaller pin ide cables.

btw, I have a 60 gb, 7200rpm hdd, i forgot which brand but its a brand
name. Before, it would work on my computer and not on my friends,
until I messed around with their usb properties. Now it doesnt even
work on mine.

Thanks for the replies, I'll report back

Well I just opened up the case and realized that the IDE wasn't
securely fastened, so I re-seeded the drive and now it works!!!!

Yes, anything electronic can break.

That wouldnt prevent the drive from spinning up.

You need an adapter to a normal IDE cable.

And doesnt spin up anymore. Thats the important bit.

Things surprisingly stopping to work on a basic level as in
your case are often electronics or contact failures. And, yes,
although electronics are _very_ reliable today, occasionaly
they fail, sometimes due to bad design, sometimes bad Q/A,
sometimes sheer bad luck

Huh? Did not get that.

Congratulations! Contact problems are still a major issue and
will remain so for the forseeable future, I expect.
