2nd XP of dual boot only boots from XP boot floppy

L

Larry(LJL269)

I've been dual booting XPhome from 1st 2 8GB partitions
on HD0 for 3 yrs. I got a new 160GB drive & copied each
partition to it but expanded each to 12GB using
PMagic7. All r NTFS. 1st XP boots fine but 2nd gets
error in BIOS 'missing OS'. I can boot it if I put in
XP boot floppy containing ntdetect,ntldr, & boot.ini.

Thinking it was 1024 cylinder problem, I flashed BIOS
from v5 to v20 with no indication from Biostar that v6
thru v20 addresssed that problem. BIOS flash had no
affect.

I also replaced ntdetect,ntldr, & boot.ini in the
partition with the 1s on XP boot floppy. No effect
either. Enabling 48bit LBA had no effect either.

Searched the Knowledge Base but found nothing new.

Any way to boot from different partition than OS
partition ?

Promise Ultra ATA100 PCI Adapter card solve this?

I am surprised that same XP boot floppy will boot 1st
or 2nd XP.

Comments/suggestions/corrections r welcome.
Your help is MUCH appreciated.
Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Go to the recovery window (XP CD) and type FIXMBR [second drive]

Might run FIXBOOT while your there.

I heard that FIXMBR destroys whole drive. True?

Na I'd of at least mention'd that :)
FIXMBR has replaced FDISK
it repairs the MBR and in your case will turn it into an XP MBR.

I figure you formatted with something that didn't leave an XP header
in the MBR.

But as always, it's best to of back'd up anything important before
working on a HD.

Greetings & thank you for your response.

Someone told me there was a problem with some BIOS'
booting a partition beginning after 1024th cylinder. I
checked Seagate's site & found no such problem. Mobo
TS knows nothing either. I apologize for the mistake.

As soon as I can image the drive, I'll pour myself a 3oz
shot of Jack & try FIXMBR.

Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

All hard drives have an MBR weather it's a boot drive or not.

but it's true you can't boot after 1024 with most systems.

Example
"First, be aware that all the information necessary to boot FreeBSD
must be located within the first 1,024 cylinders of the hard disk. "

Greetings & thank you 2x for your response.
All hard drives have an MBR weather it's a boot drive or not. yep & partitions do not have 1
but it's true you can't boot after 1024 with most systems.
I read this as 'boot part(with ntdetect, ntldr) of XP
can not be > 1024' assuming 1024 was lots of GB. It's not &
this cant be true cause I boot 2nd XP in 9th GB now. Perhaps
this is part of or next to the partition table.

I saw a diagram of MBR & can see mine in C,H,S (dec/hex?)
notation with Seagate diagnostic CD. I know it had right
partition Active. I plan to run it again at boot & look 4
discrepencies. Any hints what to look for? I'll post results
back here.

Amazingly Biostar responded to my inquiry 'Is my BIOS
capable of booting any OS beyond the 1024 cylinder
limit?' with 'IF you are referring to 48bit LBA support,
yes.' I replied with an extract of this entire post.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.

I've mostly used Norton Disk Editor, view both MBR's with it and look
for differences - it defaults to no edits are saved, and unless you
know what your doing you should keep it that way.

This is a MBR of NT (close as I can get, I don't want to screw with
mine at the moment :) ) and different than W2K or XP.
-This mentions DiskProbe don't mess with it, it's a POS.

Use DiskProbe or an MS-DOS-based utility to display the Master Boot
Record. The example here shows what you should see at Cylinder 0, Side
0, Sector 1, which is the location for the Master Boot Record. This
example shows the executable code in a Master Boot Record. This
example might not match the code in the Master Boot Record on your
computer, because some third-party boot and disk partitioning
utilities modify the code in the Master Boot Record.

Greetings & thank you for your response.

I'm trying to get Biostar TS to answer key question; 'Is it
true that there are no restrictions in mobo
or BIOS that would keep me from booting XP home
on a primary active partition starting 13GB from the
beginning of a 160GB disk?'

In meantime I'll do an experiment- disable all current disks
& hook-up old 40GB WDig drive & copy original XP thats still
on 80GB disk to partition 15GB from beginning of 40GB WDig.
If it even starts to load drivers we have a YES to my key
question.

Downloaded Hiren's BootCD and will burn it to a CD-it looks
fantastic.

Seagate diagnostic CD just showed beginning & ending CHS for
2 primary & 1 logical partitions, 4th that was all 0's,
BIOS, XBIOS both logical & physical, Assuming S in CHS is
base 64(ie 0 63 + 0 1=1 0), they seem to line-up. I'll be
glad to post details if u want.

Comments/suggestions/corrections appreciated.
Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

It won't unless you run FIXBOOT (installs boot files) and FIXMBR
(knows where to find the boot files)

You can run Lilo or Grub to do this - it requires a copy of your MBR

Hiren's BootCD is awesome. I will run it with XP that
wont boot as ATIVE.

Partition Table Doctor 3.0 (a tool to repair/modify
mbr, bootsector, partition table) has a PMagic
interface & has all capabilities I'll need without
mumbo-gumbo of Recovery Console. I will try it 1st.

Ran Norton Disk Editor which found errors that it was
supposed to send to txt file that I cant find. I can
remember 1 lost cluster error only. I fixed none. It
seems a decent app.

Hi- We have success!! FYI I did following where ->
means implies:

Booted W2000 13GB from start of spare HD-> no BIOS/MOBO
restrictions on booting.

Copied XPmin (that wouldnt boot) after W2000 & it
booted OK -> XPmin partition bad

Ran PartitionTableDr3.0 @ Hiren BootCD v7.5 & tried:

1.FIXBOOT on XPmax & XPmin -> No Errors

2. Generated new Partition Table -> fixed boot
problem @ XPmin in 5-10 mins

3. New MBR & editing start & end CHS in dec & hex r
available too.

Your help & patience was invaluable.
Thanks- bye- Larry
