2nd PATA UDMA 6 drive not detected correctly

I have two new identical Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 (6Y120L4) drives on an
Asus A8V-E deluxe mother board with the new 80 conductor ribbob cables.
Everything with the drives is set up correctly and the system BIOS detects
all my drives correctly. In order for Windows XP Pro to detect it I had to
set the BIOS setting for my secondary drive to "none". I also loaded the
latest official VIA IDE Miniport driver vers. 320B. With the BIOS set up as
it should be Windows takes forever to boot and/or I get an error message.
Now Windows XP sees both drives and they are functional evem though the all
the drives show up as SCSI drives. When will Windows fix their BIOS
detection to see these drives and then set them up with 48 bit UDMA 6 (or
better with the newer drives)? Why do I have to monkey around with a work
around in order to use Windows XP? Microsoft is supposed to be an innovation
type of organization and all I see them innovate is what someone else has
developed - then they take it and modify it for their own use. Microsoft,
please show me you can put out a product or fixes that are current (this
problem is at least 2 years old).

Why not set them in unlimited or default mode,in that mode they'll run in
udma
6,try benchmarking them.
