2nd hard disk problem

I have installed a 2nd hard disk in my PC (DELL optiflex, windows XP SP2)
which runs ok, but quite often the disk just disappears while the PC is
working. When I reboot the disk usually comes back again, but there were
times it only returned after the 2nd or 3rd reboot in a row.
This can happen once in two days but also 3 times in an hour, and so far
with no data loss.
What could possibly be the reason?

Check the power and cable connections to make sure they are snug. Make
sure you've got a good enough power supply to handle the two drives.

I had already checked connections several times, even changed the cable (both
disks are on the same cable and the primary one had always worked fine).
Power supply must be ok too, as the disk basically works, it just sometimes
disappears --if it was for power it would never start, right?

Could it be a software problem ?
