Last week my 3 week old NEC ND 1300a dvd-rw stopped
reading discs, regardless of type (copy / commercial),
tried all the usual install/uninstall drivers etc. Gave
up phoned the waranty people who said the drive was at
fault. Now have a 2 day old BTC 8x DVDRW and low and
behold the same thing has happened! Disc goes in light
flashes but the drive doesn't start to spin. Funny thing
is it will play DVD Movies, but any other media simply
doesn't register.
When I double click on the drive it comes up blank with
the CD writing taskbar on the left even if an un-
writeable media is inserted.
I'm running Windows XP Home with SP1
And i'm loosing the plot
Please help
Thanks
Neil

what is the name brand of the media you are using?
how big of a power supply do you have?
Is the drive set to master or slave and on what pci bus is it set on,
primary or secondary?
What is the speed of your processor and how much ram do you have?

Thanks for replying
Using AMD Athlon XP 2800 333MHz Barton
512 DDR333 ram
Master (only cd drive i have)
IDE1008
Power supply i'm not sure (if i open the case it voids
the waranty)
Using Memorex DVD+RW
But can't read Gta3, BF1942 commercial discs either
The machine is only a month old nad was bought complete
(not a self build)
Hope this helps

So, this means that the DVD-RW is an external unit, not installed inside the
computer's chassis/case??????

try uninstalling the drive in the device manager and see if windows will
reinstall it.
It sounds like a driver problem with windows.
One other question is it an external or internal drive?
If it is external and uses usb 2.0 and if you some other device using usb it
could be knocking it out.

It really sounds like you simply don't have the proper associations
set up for the type of media.

Did you try looking at the non-DVD media discs thru Windows
Explorer?...to see if you can see what files are on there?

Have a nice week...
