2K server problems after sp4 install

Have installed sp4 on several w2k servers. All successful but one...
The one that failed is running Exchange 2000 sp3a, IIS (w/ SSL),
Terminal Server (remote mode).

So far everything is running and reboots have been successful but
slower. The real problems are:

(1) Services hang if I choose to stop or restart them. They hang in a
stopping mode indefinately. Starting services manually is the same.
(2) Cannot pull up the network properties either through control
panel, start menu, or the network places icon on the desktop.
(3) IE will no longer browse internet. Mozilla will browse fine.
(4) Print jobs hang in que.

The install seemed to install successfully. No errors were generated
during or after installation. No errors are generated in the event
logs.

These are the problems I've found so far. When installing sp4 I did
choose to have a backup archive created because I needed it once going
from sp2 to sp3. But, I cannot uninstall sp4 via the control panel
add/remove programs. It simply hangs when it's in the process of
checking current configuration. This is what happens when attempting
to install sp4 over the top of the current sp4 install. It simply
hangs. Infact, windows installer hangs when installing any update or
software package.

I have run the uninstall batch file located at:
%systemroot%\$ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.bat

It ran with out problems. I haven't rebooted yet though. At this
point I'm a bit worried and am waiting to reboot on the weekend. I'm
also in the process of setting up a new w2k server that will take the
place of this server if/when it finally fails.

I would rather not have to go through the process of setting up a new
server mainly because of very specialized configuration of IIS and
Exchange.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I'm experincing the same problems. When you know more
please let me know here on the newsgroup. I'am trying to
find a sulution so if i have it i'll place it here too.

I am having similar problems. My Win2K server comes up OK and I can
log on, but the desktop is completely blank (jsut the background). I
cannot figure out why the explorer.exe service is not running, and it
is almost impossible to do anything through the command line.

I also request any fixes/notes/ideas be posted, please.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated, something does not run
correctly after you install SP4.

Based on your description, it can be related to something running at the
background such as some third party services or program. To isolate and
troubleshoot this issue, we suggest you download msconfig tool to perform a
Clean Boot.

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

Windows 2000 users should download it to C:\WINNT\system32. The Help File
for Windows 2000 should be downloaded to the C:\Windows\Help folder. To
use it, go to Start,Run, type msconfig and click OK.

To clean boot, please perform the steps below:

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the open box.
2. Click Startup tab.
3. Clear all the checks in the Startup list.
4. Click System Services tab.
5. Click to check Hide All Microsoft Services.
6. Clear all the remaining non-Microsoft services in the list.
7. Click OK to restart your computer.
8. Test to see if the issue is better or recurs in this condition.

In addition, you are also recommeded to create a new user account and test
to see if the same issue occurs in a new user account.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps. If anything is unclear,
please let me know.

Sincerely,

Thank you for the response Cherry! I downloaded
MSConfig.exe and it will runs fine. I make the changes
you specified and choose ok. Then the app hangs... I see
where you're getting at though. Since this is a
production server I will be working on it this weekend. I
have tried to set services to manual so they don't start
during boot, but mmc hangs when I save any changes I make
to a service. I will try a safe mode boot to see if that
gets me anywhere.

My backup server I've built during the past couple days is
almost complete. I loaded everything including SP4 on
that server. I'm getting some erratic symtoms on that one
too after a fresh load. I am starting to suspect possibly
McAfee Netshield or McAfee Groupshield. Not positive
though.

I will continue to post findings.

Thanks,

Matt W

Hi Matt,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated IIS including SMTP does not
fundtion correctly but nothing logged in event
viewer for help and Services MMC still showed IIS and SMTP as running.

Regarding this, we suggest you uninstall and then reinstall IIS so that it
can be initialized again correctly.

Hope this helps and answers your question. If anything is unclear or
anything we can help with, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
