The 2600+ 266Mhz is the highest
speed chip that is confirmed to run
on the A7A266 motherboard. (There
have been reports that the latest BIOS,
1013, allows you to run a 2800+, but
I haven't seen anyone confirm this in
reality).

However, I can't seem to find this
chip anywhere. Does anyone know
a source for it, or is the only hope
to get one second-hand?

Thanks,

P.

same question, but this time in Australia?
thanks

The Athlon MP's all run just fine in single socket motherboards.
You pay more for them but they seem to be easier to find than the
266 MHz XP2600+. As well, there is the 266 MHz MP2800+ - which
is slightly overclockable to the equivalent of about a 3000+ without
too much more in the way of noisy air cooling.

Yeah but would it work on Lets Say an ASUS A7v266-e ??? the 266 MHz
MP2800+as the bios latest only supports 2600 266mhz ?

I haven't tried it on the A7V266 series, but it works on
the A7N266 series. On the A7N266, the BIOS does not
report the name of the MP2800+ correctly, but does report
the correct speed. Running WCPUID on such a setup correctly
reports the name, clock, multiplier, cache sizes, etc.

The naming/reporting capabilities of the BIOS is probably
all that would be amiss on an A7V266 - the BIOS manufacturers
simply never expected people to use MP processors on anything
but a dualie motherboard with a dualie chipset.

There is really no difference between the XP and the MP except
that former has the L5 bridge open while the latter has it closed,
and the MPs have been tested to verify that they work in pairs.
