256 colors

Lex

I have a game here which needs WinG.dll and 256 colors. It is a windows
game. I have installed the latest WinG library from the microsoft site.
I have changed the game's properties so it runs in compatibility mode with
256 colors. I have disabled visual themes etc. (in fact I've tried it with
several combinations).

When I run the game, it appears fine until I get to the menu screen. At
which point I just get a blank black screen. if I alt+tab back into Windows
and then again back into the game, the display appears fine...but as soon as
I choose an option, it goes black again..so I have to Alt+Tab again . I
think this is probably something to do with 256 color mode for this game but
I don't know what.

Do any of you know the solution?
The game is Vikings - Strategy of the Ultimate Conquest..

Oh, and the game works perfectly on Windows 98 SE and Windows 95b and I
haven't tried it on Windows 2000. It seems to just be Windows XP...

Any suggestions? Would there be any other compatibility options using Qfix
util that could fix it?

Basically, what Compatibility Mode does is allow the older program to
"think" it is being installed on the operating system for which it was
designed. You also need to pay attention to the game's requirements, and
some need to be installed using Compatibility starting with the installation
itself by going to Start/Run/Browse and locating the install.exe or
setup.exe file on the root of the CD. You can right-click that file, follow
the pattern to use Compatibility Mode and have it install.

Most of the "older" games will run perfectly well on Windows XP. Some need
to use Compatibility Mode (details are in Help and Support), and this
TechNet article will help you:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/lgcyapps.mspx

After the install, make sure to update the program from the web site of the
creator, then right-click the icon you'll use to launch the game and make
sure the proper Compatibility settings are ready. You also need to make
sure the proper display and color settings are selected. Turning off
"themes" in the Compatibility section will allow you to continue to run them
in your regular Windows setup, but will disable them only for the particular
game.

Yes, I have installed it with compatibility mode.
I have used the compatibility settings to run it. My point is that the game
doesn't run even when in 256 color compatibility.
Really I suppose I was wondering whether there was some problem with Windows
XP 256 color compatibility...given that this game works on every single
other Operating System I've tried it on. The program is fully updated, as
are all my programs. This appears (to me) to be a problem with Windows XP
256 color mode, given the fact that it only works when Alt+Tabbing back into
the game. Or at least a problem with XP 256 color mode and the way this
game tries to use 256 color.

And of course, I do realise most of the older games will work on Windows XP.
I have over 1500 old games (I can't stand the new games. ;)) and only few
refuse to work. This is one of them.

Any real suggestions on getting this game to work in XP?

Perhaps Jimmy will drop in with a suggestion, but I've never seen a program
have that issue, Lex. Are you running any special settings on your graphics
card? No over-clocking, correct?

Hi Chris!

If it's a DOS game, Lex has already seen my suggestions, however
he might want to experiment with custom PIF settings to see if they
have any effect on that issue. At least he has the Alt+Tab workaround. :-)

The Alt+Tab isn't really a workaround. Although you get to see the game,
well...it's kinda hard to play having to alt+tab all the time ;)

I guess this is one of those ones which won't be solved. There are no extra
settings on my graphics card, and just to check I hit another graphics card
into my computer and the same thing happens. Personally it doesn't bother
me, (apart from more games being on my "non-working-XPcompat list). This
request was more for someone else who asked me about the game. Doesn't
bother me because I can simply boot to any other Windows Operating system on
other computers or that computer, just the guy who asked me...can't ;)

The Custom PIF settings I've also tried as well. Really all the standard
stuff I've tried. To be perfectly honest I;ve only really used them for
things such as disabling DPMI support for games. Just wondered if any of the
MVP's here had any other info on the 256 color thing that I was missing. I
guess it might remain one of those great unsolved ("_).

Oh well, guess I'll just leave that one off my list then, game #2084 to
start now then ;)

I'm wondering if it's a refresh rate problem, where the monitor cannot run
at the combined rate and resolution that it is being asked to when the games
go into the special 256 color mode. In some cases, interrupting the signal,
such as it would when ALT+TABing out, may allow the monitor to lock in, thus
allowing the game to run.

Just to tell, I have still had no luck. Tried all the refresh rates
available for that monitor. Also it works with the standard rate in Windows
98 (same monitor).
I'm got the impression it was just the way this game was using the 256 color
display, but given that the hundreds of other games which require 256 color
all seem to work you'd think they all try to behave in the same way ("_)..

I'm still stuck with it. If anyone else has any suggestions...then..post and
I'll certainly try them. For the moment I just recommended to the user to
load up VMWare or VirtualPC with Windows 98 ("_) His computer should be
powerful enough for it...I think.

Here's the real beauty. I'm having no luck forcing it into windowed mode. It
seems impossible. I can run it through a shortcut to use normal window
rather than maximized, it still enters full screen. It's not a DOS game so
there's no "screen" tab in the properties...so I'm not sure if this seems
like a blindingly obvious question but how exactly can I force it into
Windowed mode? ( I tend not to use XP unless I have to so it may be common
ignorance on my part ("_))

And given that I probably haven't said it thusfar, I am very greatful for
your help on this one ;)

Hi Lex,

If this is occurring in full screen mode, I would try forcing
the game to play in windowed mode instead. HTH! :-)

Hi Lex,

Try pressing Shift (or Ctrl) + ENTER to get into Window mode.
Look in Display Property / Settings / Advanced and see if there
is an option for that available through the video card drivers, and
check the game's documentation for a -windowed switch. GL! :-)

Just tried them, but still no luck. I guess forgetting key combinations like
that shows I spend far too much time in DOS 6.22 (where I do a lot of my
work). Tried a few other common combinations of keys but no luck with those
either.
No abilities with display properties for changing the windows there.Anything
else you can think of?
I've tried browsing through a few more of the fixes with QfixApp, but
nothing much that appeals to me there. Oh and if you want my
ICQ/MSN/AIM/YIM/Email etc. to make it easier to try to solve just ask. I'm
quite happy to give them.
Ah, and I tried it on yet another machine (not mine) but came across the
same problem again. Figured it's always good to check.

Hi Lex,

Try pressing Shift (or Ctrl) + ENTER to get into Window mode.
Look in Display Property / Settings / Advanced and see if there
is an option for that available through the video card drivers, and
check the game's documentation for a -windowed switch. GL! :-)

Hi Lax,

I'm going to have to meditate on this one now. Hopefully
I'll have an epiphany and post some more ideas soon. :-)

Cheers,
