I need assistance. My original ATA100 40gig hd failed.
I replaced it with a new WD 250gig hd.
I rebuild my system, 250hd recognized by both BIOS and
WinXP during rebuild. I download SP1 and then reboot.
After reboot I get blue screen.. Stop...
Unmountable_Boot_Volume. I have reviewed article
#303013, 314082. The ATAPI driver is version
5.1.2600.1133. When I attempt to follow directions for
version 1135 it says SP1 driver already there and it's
not needed. When I check Registry w/ RegEdit.. I don't
see LBA support, but I don't know how, nor can find
detailed instructions on how, to add this line to the
Registry. Any assistance sincerely appreciated as I've
been down a week now and REALLY need to get this system
back up and running.

Please advise soonest.

Thanks!
Scott

Scott;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

Jupiter,

1) Yes, Desktop.

2) Should have also said, I've reseated 80-pin IDE cable
on motherboard and drive. I've replaced it. I've even
purchased an SIIG Ultra ATA 133 Controller and tried that
and cable, to no avail.

3) Did dl diagnostics from WD. Noticed that Physical
Drive is recognized as 134.22GB while Logical Drive is
244.20GB. Caused concern, but don't know what to do
about it.

4) No, no overlays on drive. Western Digital Data
LifeGuard won't touch drive because it's the Boot Drive.

Anything else?

I confirmed with Compaq that I am running the most
current Bios for this Compaq Evo D500 desktop.

Am now trying to implement 48-bit LBA following
directions on MS Article #303013, but can't find
Sysprep/I386 directory where I need to place the 2 files
I've been instructed to create.

Any assistance or direction sincerely appreciated.

Scott

Jupiter,

I followed 303013, created EnableBigLba = 1 in registry.
I also dl'd SP1 and loaded it.

System reloads after SP1 install, but instead of giving
me the STOP! Unmountable_Boot_Error Blue Screen and
stopping... it autmatically reloads after the blue screen
appears. After watching it repeatedly I was able to
determine that it is still giving the
Unmountable_Boot_Error msg.

(sigh) anything else?
As you can see, after two weeks of fighting this... I'm
getting REAL tired.

Umm, Jupiter...

Maybe I've been a little unclear.. but I have rebuilt
this clean at least once every day while I try to resolve
this.

Once I receive the Blue Screen - Unmountable_Boot_Volume
it's over. All I can do is try again.

At this point I have done ALL of the following:
Upgraded to newest BIOS
Loaded SP1
Loaded all Compaq patches
Replaced IDE 80-pin cable
Tried dedicated IDE controller
Followed 303013

Each of these was done as a new, clean build.
I'm stumped and have absolutely no idea how to fix.

Scott;
Remove all unnecessary cards, sound, network etc.
Remove extra sticks of RAM making sure to stay at or above Windows XP
64 MB minimum.
Swap the memory sticks if it still fails.
Reseat all cables and cards.
Pay particular attention to the video card that it is fully seated
when done.

Are you downloading a new copy of SP1 each time or are you using the
same download?
If you are using the same, download again.
