I just download and install sp1 and reboot, and windows will see it as

No because SP1 no longer exists. You must install SP2 now.

No SP1?
Seems an incredibly poor decision on MS's part.
Fortunately it's all over the 'net and easily confirmed
identical with CRC check.

Not exactly. What you need is a simple key in registiy.

Open your registry and create a new DWORD value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters, called
"EnableBigLba" and set the value to 1.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the
change to take effect.

No because SP2 is a roll-up of SP1 - everything that's in SP1 is in SP2.

EXACTLY, many people aren't going to want a "roll up",
they'll only want SP1 but specifically NOT SP2. We could
argue all day about it but the truth is that SP2 is, for the
most part, does nothing positive for an already-secure
system.

You must also have a BIOS that supports 48-bit LBA.

Probably OK, but some BIOS report the HD size correctly even without
support. Check with the MB maker's site for the BIOS you have.

Be wary of installing a registry "EnableBigLba" fix. This is ignored by
WinXP Sp1. For details see: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article-303013.

Don't try this at Home (or Pro)!

From MS KB 303013: "*Warning* Data corruption can occur you use this
registry value to enable 48-bit LBA support in the original release of
Windows XP ...."

You need SP1 and 48-bit LBA BIOS! (SP2 includes SP1.)

Tried on both, worked on both. Without problems, every time...

IME, none that I could have seen. Also, no one has complained about that,
AFAIK.

Well if they've bought a system from the beginning of October onwards, they
won't have any choice in the matter as all systems from that date have been
shipping with SP2 integrated into Windows (and, obviously, an integrated SP
cannot be removed). I do agree, however, that this does remove freedom of
choice.
