2007 - two features not there that I'd hoped for

There are two features I was really hoping for with the new PPT 2007 but I
didn't see it. I don't have it installed but someone else showed me. I
looked for these two things immediately but they weren't there, that I could
see.

Renaming objects in the custom animations listing.
Copying animations from one object to another.

Please tell me I'm wrong ... tell me those features were added.
Pleeezzeeeeee.
Thanks.

We can actually do this! Sooo excited!

You have to do the renaming in the selection taskpane, not the custom
animation taskpane. But once you've renamed something in the selection
taskpane, the custom animation taskpane picks it up.

Nope, we still can't do this. But Shyam Pillai and Keith Tromer both have
addins to help with this.

But hey, one outta two...it could be worse!

I have a list of new 2007 stuff at http://www.echosvoice.com/2007.htm if
you're interested. I have a couple of things still to add, but the selection
pane renaming is listed in #8. Eventually I'll add instrux for where in 2007
to find it.

Ah, cool. It uses the Name property rather than its PPT-assigned name now.

Meaning that you can rename the shape in pretty much any old way (ie, via addins
or vba) and it'll show up in the custom animation pane. Piggie's SO happy.

Hi Diana,

If you would like to play with Office 2007 a bit, without installing it, you can use the Office 2007 test drive.

MS lists that you need to have a DSL or Cable connection (it may also work on dialup but I haven't yet tried <g>). It installs a
small add-in to Internet Explorer, and oh yeah, cookies, gotta eat some cookies, (<g> but the test drive actually is faster for me
on a cable connection running on an old slow machine with Win 2000 and 500K RAM than the 'real' beta runs installed on a Win XP
machine with 2GB RAM.
http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/testdrive.mspx

You can't do things like save files, or print or email, but you can have a look-see at where all of the features are stored and how
they work.

I realize the beta will be buggy, but is it too buggy to do the install. If
it's not too bad I wouldn't mind doing a full test drive, if you think it'll
help out there. I know the office quite well, so should be able to give it
somewhat of a decent test.

Lot's of people now use Virtual PC for this. Keeps all the problems away

Hi Glen,

It would be nice if MS (or someone <g>) posted the step by step instructions on how to setup a Virtual PC [including machine
requirements], run the VPC it, then install the 2007 beta on it.

Nice thing about the test drive is you can 'run it' on Windows versions and on PCs that can't run 2007.

Bob,

True. And then you have to set up the extensions so you can paste into it,
and then set up the networking so you can get an internet connection. Oh,
and then set up file sharing so you can share files between your VPC and
real computer. And then compress your virtual drive when it gets bloated and
on it goes!

Hi Diana,

The MS 'warnings' on the 'Get the Beta' link (#1) below are to not install it on a machine you depend on for your daily work. While
it is still a bit rough in performance, it's pretty well along on the 'pretty stuff' side and will definitely give you an idea as to
where things are how they work compared to prior versions.

You can also install the 2007 feedback tool from the link #2 below as well and send feedback directly to the MS Office product
teams.

There's also a Powerpoint 2003 menubar simulation that takes you to the 2007 Powerpoint equivalent commands
http://officebeta.iponet.net/en-us/powerpoint/HA101490761033.aspx
"Interactive: PowerPoint 2003 to PowerPoint 2007
command reference guide"

To use that site/guide (the OfficeOnline 2007 preview site you need either Office 2007 beta 2 or the Active X control from link #3
below). The site also has some demos and there are some e-learning classes as well. I've found those helpful as they're put
together from the perspective that MS says is how they see users working with the products. It puts, for example, the ribbon use
into 'you can do this' context past what the 'research has shown' explanations have put forth.

So, there are several ways you can take Office 2007 out for a play :)
Let us know how you get on.
