Yeah. It sucks, doesn't it? I have had that happen, too. If I recall
correctly, it's because the slide layout doesn't have a slide number
placeholder. I suspect you missed one when you checked the master.
The only sure-fire way to get this to work that I am aware is to go to View
| Slide Master and go to the master slide -- the big thumbnail at the top of
the list. Turn on the slide number placeholder, then copy it.
Go to each slide layout (the small thumbnails) and paste the slide number
placeholder on every layout. Delete the one that's already there if you
want. The goal is to make sure that every layout has a slide number
placeholder.
Then go to Insert | Header and Footer and tick the option for slide number.
It *should* stick.

I've tried that as well - same thing. Tick / apply to all...no page
numbering. Click on insert / header and footer again, and the tick is not
there. Frustrating!
This was a 2003 template that I'm now using in 2007. Could that be the
problem?

Try ticking the option for slide number in Insert | Header and Footer
instead.

I have a presentation in which the numbering doesn't work...I've gone
step
by
step through everything I can find but I don't see it. Checked the
master
to
ensure a placeholder was there, that the text is visible. I click on
the
slide thumbnail, click insert / slide number, check off slide
numbering,
click apply to all and okay. Nothing appears. When I go back to
insert /
slide number, nothing is checked. Any thoughts?
