I tried to change the compile mode of the program from Debug (which I
presumed it was) to release and I just couldn't find where to change it in
the project properties or elsewhere

Any suggestions?

Check the debug or build menus. There is a "configuration" menu item. You
can change it there.

IIRC the Express edition creates a debug build when running the project from
within the IDE and a release build when publishing the project.
