Are there any drawbavks to purchasing a 2004 version of Norton or McAfee that's
"on sale" vs a 2005 version? Wouldn't the 04 just update?

No drawbacks as the 2004 version will detct the same viruses/malware
as the 2005 versions if properly updated.

To have a yearly upgrade is just a marketing ploy to make more
dollars.

Is it true you must buy a special 3 user version of Norton if you have 3
home computers, to use it on all 3 of them?

This would be an incentive to buy Mcafee, which I haven't in the past, so I
could put it on all 3 computers, without any extra cost.

Well, no. You don't *have* to.

You can do that with about any product.

You may want to have a look at f-prot.
They offer multiple licenses at reasonable
costs and you are not forced to upgrade
each PC at their servers...

I thought the required activation process makes use on a second home
computer impossible. That perhaps I couldn't get updates without this
process. No?

I have McAfee ver 6 suite (the sub is active thru next February) and the
anti-virus module hasn't been able to update for the past five weeks (some
kind of script error) and the tips on their forum have provided no relief to
me and countless others who are posting.
Which is precisely why I'm lurking here to see what else is out there.

say no to Mcafee and Norton

go with AVG grisoft(free for home use) or Eset NOD32

Forget about Norton Antivirus. NAV is inefficient and slows the PC to
death. The only success Symantec encounters with NAV is their marketing
success. Every professional knows that NAV doesn't find any new viruses
on PCs since ages.

I run a shop where I sell air soft guns and perform antivirus and other
computer repairs since a few months. I have every three days or so
Customers who have NAV, are infected to death with Netsky (sometimes
more than a thousand files infected that NAV did not detect nor
desinfect). I remove it, boot minimum, run stinger
(http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe), then reboot
normal, then run stinger again, then update Winshit, then install McAfee
VirusScan, then update VirusScan then Bob is the Customer's uncle.

So, again, forget about NAV. For those who are sceptical, go to a store
(FNAC in France for example) and see how many McAfee vs NAV boxes they
have for sale...

To me, McAfee doesn't need to be "updated" in terms of product version,
as long as you have the automatic update enabled, which is highly
recommended.

My 2 euros.
