2003 to 2003 GPO question

Jim Geith

We've already done the forestprep and domain prep on what was a 2000 root
domain and one of 13 child domains. The root domain has group policies tat
still differ from the child domains. Under the root domain I see 13 objects
under Computer Configuration-Administrative Templates-Windows Components.
On the child domains I see what appears to be 6 object from the 2000 policy
structure. Should I run forestprep again to force the objects down to the
child domains? I originally had posted a question about some errors in the
directory logs regarding objects replicating before the superclass. I was
advised to ingnore the warnings.

Thanks.

Just a little additional information. All domain controllers are SP4 except
for two or three on SP3. None are SP2 or below. I do see new 2003 objects
such as the Windows Updates added to all policies in the child domains.
Replication is healthy.

Last bit of information. I noticed the child domains pre-existing 2000
policies still have not upgraded, however any new policies do have all of
the additional objects.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for your post!

If the root domain is the only domain upgraded to Windows Server 2003, then
it will be the only domain with the Windows 2003 ADMs. It is important to
remember that FRS replicates the ADMs from the SYSVOL, and FRS Replication
is only domain wide not forest wide.

Example:
<SYSVOL Location>\<Domain
Name>\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\Adm

Now Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, contains new adm additions, so if one
domain is upgraded to Windows 2000 SP4 it will have more policies in it ADM
than a domain at SP3.

So if you want the Windows 2000 Child domains to get the new ADMs, It is
recommended to upgrade the domain to Windows Server 2003. If you want
policies associated to Windows XP Clients, you can update them by using
following the KB Article below:
