2003-skipping fields on import

I recently installed Office Pro 2003. Today, I tried to import a large
comma delimited file previously exported from an SQL database. I have done
this many times before, and always was able to skip unneeded fields, to
reduce the size of the database. With 2003, the "Skip this field" check box
does not seem to work correctly. If I click "skip" for one field, when I go
to the next field, "skip" is already checked. If I uncheck it for the new
field, and click on the previous field, that field is now unchecked.

I checked for updates, and the Office update wizard says I don't need any
new updates. Does anyone have an answer/resolution to this problem?

there is definitely a bug in our heretofore trusty import wizard (Access
2000, i miss you!). the problem apparently lies in the Field Options screen
in the wizard; when i tried a text file import, i found that when you click
on a column other than the first one in the grid, the information controls
above do not change to match the new column selection.

but you don't need to use the Field Options screen in the wizard. click the
Advanced... button in the lower left corner of the dialog box. in the field
list on the Advanced screen, you can make any changes you need to. i tested
my import with a change to each of the four columns in the field list, one
change on each of four different fields - and the import worked exactly as
ordered.

try it out, and good luck.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

John,

I too am having a similar problem with Access 2003. I have
used Access97, 2000 & 2002 to import fixed width files, so
I know that this is nothing that I am doing wrong.

When using the Import Text Wizard to import a fixed Width
File, on the forth Screen there is an option to select
fields that you wish to Rename, Skip or set a data type
for, but it is not possible to do any of these as Access
will not allow any other field except the first to be
selected. There is a work around by using the Advance
button, but this is thoroughly impractical for the amount
of fields that I have to deal with.

Hopefully this has been resolved already, otherwise I will
have to go back to Access 2002.

I will get back if I find anything.

Hi John,

Apparently Microsoft are aware of this problem and
it "should" be resolved in the next service pack. If the
csv files you import are always in the same format, then
you could save your Import specification once you have got
it right and use a "blank" copy of your Access database
when you which to import your file. I believe that is
possible to export the file specification, but I am not
sure how this is done.

Graham
