2003 in 2007 -- why can I not eddit Master View?

Opening a 2003 presentation in 2007, I can not edit the Master View.

Also if I save as 97-2003 and try to edit it on a 2003 machine, I can no
longer edit it there!

Any hints at to why not?

The top and the bottom -- NOT header and footer data.

The TOP has two graphics, a box, and some text; the bottom has text.

I'm sorry. I don't understand what you mean by "the top and the bottom." Can
you clarify, please?

OK ....

The file was originally created in 2003.

There are two graphics in each top corner and a simple box/rectangle between
them.

On the bottom is the date the presentation was created and or modified.

There is nothing in between and the usuall MS text boxes found on a Master
are not there.

So ... 2007 does not see anything on the Master page (I "select(ed) all")
and I can not sellect individual pieces of the items on the Master page.

After seeing your explanation, I was going to suggest that you select the
slide master itself (the big thumbnail at the top of the list), click the
"master layout" button on the Slide Master tab of the Ribbon (in Slide
Master View) and reapply any missing placeholders.
