2003 Active Directory Design guidline question

Hi
Could someone please tell me why one would implement
separate domains in a 2003 design.

If I had a company with very seperate business units, that
only wanted to share a exchange GAL and nothing more and
may want to break away at a later stage, would one
implement a seperate OU per business unit or domain per
business unit. What about seperate forests in 2003.
I would appreciate any guidlines of when to implement
OU's, Domains, Trees or forests in 2003.
