2000 upgrade freezes

When trying to upgrade from 98 to 2000 the system freezes
at the menu 'Performing Final Tasks'. The 1st two tasks
are completed on this menu, 'Install Start Menu Items'
and 'Register components'. It then freezes on 'Upgrades
Program + System Settings'.

Tried rebooting and it goes right to the same place and
freezes again. Tried bringing it up in safe mode and
same thing. Completed the NTFS conversion of the hard
drive but can not get the system to complete the setup or
to comeup at all. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem with a compaq 7478 desktop..
Upgrade to win2k pro Probs. Installed until says "could
not load installer for NET. Contact your hardware vendor.
Click ok...only option. It does this with NET client, NET
Service, and Infrarred. Reboot and start over . What are
options? Data on drive is needed and is now ntsf. Can i
safely get win98 back. no backup. or can win 2k install
still work? Bios is up to date.
