Hi All,
I have searched here but not getting the answers i am looking for so
here goes.
I have a Windows 2000 server which is domain controller for the domain
( a school ) and i am joining Windows XP clients to the domain, this
works fine. What does not work is when i set a Group policy -- the only
machine which takes the policy is the domain controller.

Is there an idiots guide to setting up Group policy for domain users
somewhere please?

I can do it in Windows 2003 without any problems, i have also added the
..adm files from XP to Windows 2000.

cheers,
Martin

What were your attempts to create the policies you wanted? How did you
try to setup a new policy?

The "standard" steps to create a policy are the following:
1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers
2. Create a OU (or a complete OU structure that - at best - matches your
company's structure) and move the computer and user objects into the OU
that shall overtake the Group Policy. At best you do create a OU with
users for the user-GPs and a OU with computers for the computer-GPs.
3. Right-click the OU, select Properties, select the Group Policy tab
and create a Group Policy. Make the changes you wish.

Always keep in mind that computers will only apply the computer settings
of a GP as users will only apply user settings of a GP.

cheers,

Florian

Hi Florian,
Many thanks for the prompt and helpful reply. I did not have the users
correctly set up in OUs which i do now. I also set up each computer in
an OU...BUT this still does not seem to reach the client machine.
The login script from server works and all network drives are
reconnected and work fine, just profiles that dont work.

I see that for Windows XP clients working off a Windows 2000 server one
needs to copy over the adm files which i done (after editing them) but
this doesnt help much... I use the IE title for testing.

Any ideas?
Thanks once again
Martin

Ok,
to answer my own question. you must ensure that DNS is running on the
machine and is being pointed to from the clients. This was not the case
before and now it is and voila it now works. Thanks for the help
anyway,
Martin
