2000 Professional hangs during logon

Windows 2000 Professional sp4 hangs during logon after id and password
entered. The boot process is OK up to this point, but after the logon info
is entered the system hangs. The same thing happens when I try to start in
safe mode. The machine's power cord was knocked out of the wall before this
problem started.
Can't find the W2K install CD to try the recovery console. This is the only
W2K Pro machine. Would the recovery console from a XP install CD work with
this machine?

You may only have a problem within your profile. Why not to try that:

After Typeing Username and Password, keep pushed the shift-button and click
ok!
That will suppress some autostart functions...
