This is my third and final attempt at 2000pro. This is a multi part question.
I have gotten to the point where I have set up the admin and user accts and
installed sp4. I have read all 19 pages of horror stories regarding critical
and automatic updates. I have diabled the auto update at this point to ensure
that nothing goes wrong in the backround. So far everything is(for the most
part) working fine. Questoin #1, How do I go about choosing which critical
updates I should apply? Do I start at the top of the list and go one by one
to the bottom or vice versa? This is a stand alone personal machine not
connected to a network and am using a modem for internet use. 1.25gig
processor, half gig DDR, 128 megs video ram, 120gig master,20 gig slave. Since
everything is working right to this point, Can I back up a complete copy of
the C drive(ntfs) to the D drive(FAT32) without any probems? Would I still be
able to restore from that or should I convert the D drive to ntfs. Currenly
the D drive is empty and intanded only for backup puposes. I know this is a
lot to ask for but all help is greatly appreciated

Normally it should not create any problems in selecting to
install the critical updates assuming that SP4 is
perfectly applied without any problems.

You can try one critical update at a time from top it will
be better as you are using a dialup connectivity to the
internet. This should have no probs at all.

Third and final? what happened before?
Set Critical updates to 'notify when available'
The Details of the update will show whether its relevant to yr sys
Do not install more than three at a time, reboot after the install.
Do NOT install winupdate drivers, use only hw manu site for drivers
If you want a 'complete sys backup' then probably a third party tool, eg
Ghost
If however you want 'data' backups, then whatever backup tool you prefer.
ntfs is the native file sys for win2k, better security, more economic with
file space etc

I don't want to seem an a**, but if I knew what happened before, I would
not be here seeking the help o the best. It just seemed that 98SE with half
the RAM and no Video RAM wa more stable and workable. I unerstand your
explanation of doing the criical updates.Thank you for the advice. I am a
little unclear of the "system" and "Data" bakups. I would believe that a
system Backup would be the entire HD. That would be OK too. What I don't
really want to do is have to go in and re-add addresses ,phone #'S, speacialy
saved files etc. That I have saved to disk yet am unsure if the saved disk
has nit been the cause of the problem al along. (Virus saved to disk) thus
reload that and there goes the problem all over again in an ugly circle. Now
that every thing is free from infection, Will data backup save the previously
mentioned information? Also You didn't touch on would I have to save the
backup to an NTFS Drive. All that I have read was that a backed up NTFS drive
has to be restored to an ntsf drive. Nothing about having to save it to an
ntsf formatted dive. Should I just go ahead and convert my "D" drive to NTFS
? Thank you againfor your response and assistance. Billy

I fyou post the port number I or someone else may be able
to help you close or stealth it.

this pont I am showing a SP5 In my add & remove and I
think that I have applied something that does not belong.
From what I have read SP5 is for NT and not 2000 PRO.
Correct me please if I a wrong. At this point every thing
seems fine (no virusses, worms, horses, or spyware) just
one open port that I can't seem to get secured ( according
to Symsntec). Everything else is supposedly "stealth".
I'll do some mre research on that before I take up any
more of your valuable time. Again thank you Billy

Called Microsoft -800 and no such thing. Is this vapor
ware?

stealth. I don't know what changed between now and last time because I
haven't made any changes. Thank you for offering the assistance though it is
appreciatedYou are very nice people on thies site. How Do I go about ordering
the update CD and what is the cost? Billy
