Within the last couple of days my computer stopped installing any software, (aim, adobe...) and it will not power down.

I currently have Windows 2000 and Windows XP on this computer, but stopped using XP since the same problems were happening there. I switched to useing 2000 only and it hasn't been a problem for a few months but now 2000 is doing it.

Any help? :(

Sure, no problem ... what day do you want to drop the PC off to me ... :)

This should fix your "snap-in" problem though ...

Are you using XP or 2000?

XP is the better of the two, the link refers to XP not 2000? if I were you I would use XP with all the updates in place?????

Sorry shorty,

But we need to know who made your PC ... and how you come to be using Win2000

You may need to find a good local computer tech who can better assist you.

Well, here is the problem.

I bought the computer with 2000 on it from my old employer, they were selling 800s since MSFT no longer had them under contract with the company.

When I receive the computer (I think it was June) it had nothing on it but the operating system. I attempted to upgrade the 2000 to XP, but instead it installed both on it. I used XP because it is better, but when I couldn't install anything on it or shut it down I found that 2000 was working fine, so I stopped using the XP.

NOW 2000 is having this problem. The other day I couldn't contract anything, and I figured out that I needed to install MDA, which I did and then it worked. So something is definitely tweaked. It is getting really frustrating though.

Format the HDD and reinstall XP ONLY do this>Setting up your Operating System on a new and/or upgrade PC from the point of having fully installed the components and they are functioning correctly.

  • Start the computer and enter BIOS
  • Set date and time [this is important if you have upgraded your PC and also used the OS disk before].
  • Now set your boot formation as follows 1st boot CD ROM or DVD
  • Disable ALL the other boot devices.
  • Press F10 to save your settings in BIOS.
  • Insert your OS disk
  • Install and follow the instructions setting you desired preferences, authentic windows key/language/country Etc:
  • Upon completion of the set up restart the PC.
  • Now install the required drivers sound/LAN/Etc:
Happy computing

Sorry, "800s" only mean to me you have a very old PC ... that may explain why you had/have problems.

I really need to know more about what this PC is ... are there any markings or name on the PC at all ... any friends who could help tell you?

Do you have any data that you need to save off the PC ... if so, save it, or you risk loosing it.

Not much more I can do ... but read here and tell me what you got.. http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/ch-x86-table.html

go straight to the Win2000 section ;)
