Hello,

It is supposed to be a clean install over Windows ME but I still have some
old files on the root. All of them are uppercase names so I assume they
all are garbage from the old W98 installation.

Is it safe to delete them? Are all those uppercase-name files from Windows
98, while lowercase are from 2000? (BTW, there is no need to use W98 anymore)

SETUP.LOG
BOOTSECT.LOG
NETLOG.TXT
DETLOG.TXT

Obviously the following are from W98:

COMMAND.COM
IO.SYS
MSDOS___
CLASSES.1ST
SUHDLOG.DAT
SYSTEM.1ST
MSDOS.SYS
AUTOEXEC.BAT
CONFIG.SYS
CONFG.BAK
AUTOEXEC.BAK

Thanks for your help, just want to be sure since this is my third day dealing
with 2000.

You didn't do a clean install. A clean install means to format the
drive and install the operating system from scratch. The files you
report would not have survived a clean (format) install. I suggest that
you start again from scratch, boot with your Windows 2000 CD and at the
appropriate screen format the drive "Full NTFS" and install Windows 2000
cleanly.

A Windows 2000 installation does not take three days - the basic
process takes just 40 minutes, provided you install Windows onto
a freshly formatted disk, as John recommends.

Don't be so rude please. I'm asking questions and you give me recommendations.
Of course it took me 30 minutes to install, what I'm trying to do is to
learn from scratch.

Bye bye geniuses.

No rudeness intended. To avoid being misunderstood it
helps expressing yourself very, very clearly. Your statement
"this is my third day dealing with 2000" can be interpreted
in several different ways.

No one has been rude to you and the recommendations given were all sound.

If you really want to learn from scratch, here are a few basic tech articles
