I am trying to network a XP laptop and a 2000 desktop together. They
are connected through a Belkin router. I don't even know where to
start. I would like simple instructions since I will have to pass them
on to my mother-in-law; it's her computer. I am very technologically
savvy with XP but I have never dealt with 2000.

Thanks!

Networking under Win2000 works exactly the same way as
networking under WinXP. Your best bet would be to sit in
front of your own PC and talk your mother through the process
at her end. Since you're fully comfortable with WinXP, you
won't have a problem.

I suspect the XP computer is XP home? If so, I would suggest creating
the shares on the XP computer and connecting to them from the W2000. XP
home doesn't have the security settings that 2000 does (it doesn't
really even understand them). XP home will just share things to anyone
on the network, which is probably what you want in a home network. Just
go to "help" in the start menu and search for "sharing files" or
similar. Home has a wizard and usually a pre-shared folder already
created for you.
