Hi,

I don't know where to post this. I think I will try this newsgroup.

I went to Costco the other day. They had a Viewsonic 20" wide screen 8ms
LCD monitor (plug to a Mac Mini) for sale for $399. I was trying to look
for some review but I found nothing becasue Viewsonic said that this monitor
was only sold in Costco.

One thing I don't understand is that if this kind of monitors has a maximum
refresh rate of 60Hz, does that means games like Call Of Duty will set the
game itself to 60 fps? Will this mean that the game will be flickering?

Do you guys have any opinion on this particular monitor? Do I need a new
video card to drive the native resolution of this monitor (it is pretty
high). I have a ATI 9800Pro.

It looks awesome with the mac over there in Costco.

Refresh rates do not apply to LCD monitors. There will be no flickering at
60Hz.
See http://www.necdisplay.com/support/css/monitortechguide/index04.htm

8ms is pretty good. Scrutinze the monitor on fast motion video, if possible,
if that's how you will use it.

Consider the Gateway FPD2185W.

The gateway has a very nice specs but it is $599.
The Viewsonic is $399.

$599 + tax + tips + s&h ~ $700?
$399 + tax from Costco ~ $450?

$700 - $450 ~ $350

$350 can buy a lot of chicken.

How about gaming?
I've heard that if the monitor is using 60Hz, it is no point to draw the
screen more than 60fps. So, Windows will restrict the game to draw anything
more than 60fps making the game look choppy or not smooth or something like
that etc.

So, even though 60Hz does not have any effect on a LCD monitor, the game
itself may have problem becasue it is restricted to 60 fps rather than 100
fps etc.

Is this true?

If the monitor you're referring to is this one:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11104098&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=

the Viewsonic part number is VA2012wb (at the bottom of the page). It
doesn't seem to be special to Costco. (Not a bad price, though.) You may
find reviews of that model, but Google will mainly show pages from vendors.

LCDs behave differently from CRTs. TFT (thin film transistor) LCDs show no
flicker (for me) at 60 Hz. (I can't stand CRTs at 60 Hz for long; I normally
used 85 Hz, although 75 was bearable.) I have no idea whether it will be OK
for gaming, but I presume that it'll be better than a 16 or 25 ms model. (I
doubt that the response times of LCDs are regulated by any agency, so it's
probably not wise to use the numbers too strictly as a basis of comparison.)

The 9800 Pro would have no trouble running at 1680X1050 (the native
resolution of the Viewsonic) at any frequency the monitor can support. The
card is rated at 85 Hz at 2048X1536, as an example.

(Don't be concerned that 1680X1050 isn't listed. It is supported.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Yes, that is it.
It says that this model is only sold in Costco in the Viewsonic site.
I found no review from anywhere.

Is it any good?
